This is especially the case with garments made from 100% wool or wool knits, as they can lose both their color and their shape to shrinkage if washed. Padding, too, can be negatively impacted if washed. Padding, especially when it is made from polyester fibers, is bulky but uniform in thickness. If washed, the fibers will separate and collect at the bottom of the stitched channel that holds them in place. This will effectively ruin the garment as its heat retaining properties will be permanently voided.
